Human rights activist and lawyer Femi Falana has urged the Federal Government to compensate the families of those who lost their lives in recent stampedes across the country. Speaking on Friday in Akure at the Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series, organized by the Ondo State Government in honor of the late governor, Falana criticized the Nigeria Police for their failure to provide adequate security during the incidents.
The stampedes, which occurred in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja, resulted in the deaths of over 65 people who were attempting to collect palliatives. Falana emphasized that the loss of lives was not due to poverty but rather the failure of security, noting that the police had a responsibility to protect citizens during such gatherings.
