Areview of the 2025 proposed budget has shown that the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) plans to spend N38 billion on foodstuffs and catering materials supplies.
The total number of male inmates at the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) stood at 77,535, female convicts stood at 1702.
In previous times, there have been concerns on poor welfare of prisoners in the country.
For instance recently, inmates at the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS) Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, protested against poor feeding, multiple sources familiar with the incident told SaharaReporters.
The inmates also accused officials of the facility of stealing of some bags of rice donated to them from the food store.
A group, the Prisoners Right Advocacy Initiative, called for a probe into the poor feeding of inmates in custodial centres across the country.
Recently, a video went viral alleging that inmates at the custodial centre were being subjected to inhumane treatment, including being served poorly cooked beans as breakfast.
Office stationeries and computer consumables are expected to gulp N54.6million, magazines and periodicals cost N18.3million, drugs and medical supplies are expected to cost N1.062 billion, field and camping materials supplies ware budgeted for N82.9 million, uniforms and other clothing budget stood at N1.716 billion.
Maintenance of motor vehicle/transport equipment is budgeted to cost NN218.8 million, maintenance of office building/residential quarters is budgeted at N456.3 million.
Others include maintenance of plants and generators at N119.4 million.
