House to tackle withheld bar results, backlog of law students awaiting call to bar

THE NATION

The House of Representatives has called for the immediate release of withheld Bar examination results and a resolution to the backlog of students awaiting their Call to the Bar. Lawmakers described the situation as a humanitarian crisis, warning that the delay, which affects over 6,000 students, poses serious threats to the future of aspiring lawyers and the legal system. The motion, sponsored by Benjamin Okezie Kalu and Hon. Ibrahim Ayokunle Isiaka, condemned the Council of Legal Education (CLE) for withholding results, highlighting tragic cases where students have died due to the stress and uncertainty surrounding the issue.

The House also raised concerns about elderly students, aged between 70 and 80, who pursued law out of passion but remain stuck in bureaucratic delays. To address the crisis, lawmakers urged the CLE to establish a streamlined and efficient Call to Bar process that prioritizes qualified students. They stressed the need for swift action to protect the dreams of law graduates and maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s legal profession.
