How being broke caused Nigerian boxer’s death in Ghana

Former Nigerian light-heavyweight champion Segun “Success” Olanrewaju, 40, died during a fight in Accra, Ghana, on Saturday after collapsing in the ring. The Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) revealed that Olanrewaju had been cleared for a Friday bout but was deemed overweight, leading to its cancellation. Despite lacking approval for a rescheduled fight on Saturday, he proceeded, needing funds to settle debts. During the match against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu, Olanrewaju slumped after a punch, was rushed to the hospital, and pronounced dead.

Coach Babatunde Ojo disclosed he had warned Olanrewaju against taking the fight due to short notice and lack of preparation. The NBBofC criticized the Ghana Boxing Association for allowing the unapproved bout. Olanrewaju, a former national and West African champion, had returned to the ring despite concerns, leading to the tragic incident.
