‘I never knew friendship until prison – I found pals after murdering mum’

DAILY STAR

Gypsy Rose Blanchard learned the meaning of a ‘true’ friend in prison.

The 32-year-old, from the US, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the role she played in her mother Clauddine ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard’s murder. Dee Dee had Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy – a rare psychological disorder – where she abused Gypsy by fooling her into believing she had illnesses like Leukaemia and Muscular Dystrophy.

To escape the years of abuse, Gypsy plotted with then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to murder her mum. Godejohn stabbed Dee Dee 17 times while she slept. He is currently serving life in prison without parole for first-degree murder. She served eight-and-a-half of her 10 year sentence.

In light of her early release on December 28 2023, Gypsy has now given her “first public account” of her ordeal of escaping abuse and her pursuit of a future free from prison bars and the control of her mother.

In the e-book, made from an exclusive collection of interview transcripts and journal entries, Gypsy is now telling “her truth” in ‘Released: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom’ – with a hand from journalist and advocate Melissa Moore and author Michele Matrisciani.
