France reports nearly 200 cholera cases

Many parts of Africa have recently seen fatal outbreaks of cholera, which has highlighted the shortage of local vaccine production.

The French public health agency reported 193 cases of cholera in Mayotte as of June 18, 2024, with 172 cases locally acquired and 21 infected abroad.

Cholera is an infectious disease that causes severe diarrhea, vomiting, and muscle cramps, and spreads easily in unsanitary conditions.

Mayotte, home to 320,000 people, reported its first locally acquired cases in late April, resulting in two deaths, including a three-year-old girl.

French authorities face criticism for inadequate access to drinking water, and President Emmanuel Macron has called for increased vaccine production to combat the outbreak.
