According to the police in a statement released on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the act by the officer seen in the video encouraged the abuse of the naira contrary to the provisions of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Act and demeaned the police officer and the Nigeria Police Force at large.

The statement reads in part: ”We condemn the content of the video in its entirety as well as all forms of unethical, demeaning, un-dignifying, and unprofessional acts of its officers, especially ones that subject them to servitude.  Steps are, therefore, being taken towards identifying the police officer in the said video in order to award appropriate sanctions.

“In this regard, the young man in the video is hereby called upon to present himself to the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Department nearest to him, or contact the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, for proper investigation into the circumstances of the video.

“We appreciate all well-meaning Nigerians for bringing this to public knowledge and assure them that the corrective and punitive steps being taken will be brought to a conclusive and definitive end,” he said.

In a now viral video, the young man was seen spraying naira notes which the officer held for him. Earlier, the police officer was seen helping him to open his car door.

In an earlier tweet on X, the Force’s spokesperson ACP Adejobi,  described the officer’s behaviour as “embarrassing” and “disgusting” to the police force.

“This was a case study at the IGP’s conference today in Abuja. This has been condemned, and an investigation has been instituted into the case. Senior officers have been ordered to take action against such in their AoRs and screen those who are to have police escorts and guards.

“Even the guy he was escorting doesn’t deserve to have a police escort. It’s embarrassing to the force and disgusting. Perhaps the policeman was on an illegal duty. We will fish him out and many alike.”
