The 71-year-old man accused of drugging his wife and recruiting scores of men to sexually abuse her for more than 10 years, has made a chilling admission in court.

Dominique Pelicot made his first testimony since his trial began on September 2. He stands alongside 50 other men who are also accused of raping his now ex-wife Gisèle. The men were identified from footage he recorded of them abusing her.

“I am a rapist,” Dominique said, “like all the others in this room”, a reference to his 50 co-defendants.

More chillingly still and referring to Gisèle, the grandfather admitted that “she did not deserve this”.

He also added that he was “very happy with her”.

During his testimony, Dominique opened up about his traumatic childhood, living with an abusive father, and said he was abused by a male nurse when he was aged nine.
