TikTok deletes 2.1 million Nigerian videos in Q3 2024 over violations

TikTok has reported the removal of 2.1 million videos uploaded by Nigerian users during the third quarter of 2024 for breaching its content policies

With a total of 147.8 million contents removed Glo, the ByteDance’s short video platform said that Nigeria ranked among the top 50 countries contributing to policy-violating videos in Q3

In its Community Guidelines Enforcement report, TikTok revealed that the top 50 markets associated with policy violations accounted for nearly 90% of all content removals for the quarter

The deleted content was found to breach one or more of TikTok’s policies, which focus on Integrity and Authenticity, Privacy and Security, Mental and Behavioral Health, Safety, and Civility, among others

During this review period, TikTok also reported the removal of 214.8 million accounts identified as either fake or belonging to users suspected to be under 13 years of age

The majority of the deleted accounts were fake, with 187.3 million removed. Additionally, 24.3 million accounts suspected of being owned by users under 13 were taken down, alongside 3.2 million accounts removed for unspecified reasons

“We remain vigilant in our efforts to detect external threats and safeguard the platform from fake accounts and engagement.

“These threats persistently probe and attack our systems, leading to occasional fluctuations in the reported metrics within these areas.

“Despite this, we are steadfast in our commitment to promptly identify and remove any accounts, content, or activities that seek to artificially boost popularity on our platform,” TikTok stated in the report.

The company reported that it removed a total of 1.3 billion comments from videos. Additional actions taken by the social media platform included the removal of 1.1 billion likes on videos, the suspension of 12.2 million live sessions, and the elimination of 57.2 million fake followers. TikTok stated that these removed likes, followers, and follow requests were identified as being generated through ‘automated or inauthentic mechanisms
