The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has put forward a bold demand of N794,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the South West geopolitical zone. This call was made during a presentation by the chairperson of the Lagos State chapter of NLC, Funmi Sessi, at the ongoing public hearing of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage in Ikeja, Lagos.
Sessi emphasized that this demand was collectively agreed upon by all members of the union in the South West region. The push for a higher minimum wage comes amid efforts by the government to address economic disparities and improve the standard of living for workers across the country.
The inauguration of a 37-member panel on the new minimum wage by President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, underscores the importance of this issue. The panel, inaugurated in the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja on January 30, 2024, signals a commitment to engaging stakeholders and finding a fair and sustainable solution to the wage question.
As discussions continue, the NLC remains steadfast in its mission to advocate for the welfare and rights of workers, ensuring that their contributions to national development are duly recognized and rewarded.
