Rights lawyer urges EFCC to probe entire Buhari administration following Emefiele’s trial revelations

Pelumi Olajengbesi, a prominent human rights attorney and Managing Partner at Law Corridor, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to launch a comprehensive investigation into all cabinet members and appointees who served under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Olajengbesi’s call for investigation comes in the wake of startling revelations emerging from the trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who faces allegations of financial misconduct.

The human rights lawyer emphasized the need for the EFCC to conduct a thorough audit of the financial transactions and activities of all officials who held positions during Buhari’s two-term tenure, spanning from 2015 to 2023.

Commending the EFCC for uncovering the alleged forgery involving Buhari’s signature and that of former Secretary-General of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, Olajengbesi stressed the importance of accountability and transparency in governance.

He asserted, “The audacity of those in power and their criminal influence is becoming too much and must be stopped.”

Olajengbesi urged the EFCC not only to focus on Emefiele but also to extend its investigation to all principal actors who served under the Buhari administration, emphasizing the need for accountability and deterrence against corruption.

Citing the recent case of the suspended Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency, Ahmad Salihijo, over an alleged N1.2bn fraud, Olajengbesi underscored the urgency of addressing systemic corruption issues.

He called for a thorough audit of Emefiele and all officials who served under the Buhari administration to ensure accountability and restore public trust in governance.

The trial against Emefiele has seen three witnesses testify against him, including an EFCC official and a forensic document examiner, who revealed evidence of forged documents used in the transfer of $6.2m from the CBN in February 2023.

Olajengbesi’s plea for accountability resonates amidst mounting concerns over financial misconduct and corruption allegations involving high-ranking officials during the Buhari administration.
