Kano High Court sentences Chinese to death for murdering Nigerian girlfriend

In a landmark verdict, the Kano State High Court has pronounced the death penalty for Geng Quandong, a Chinese citizen, for the murder of his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Buhari.

Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji delivered the judgment on Tuesday, finding Quandong, aged 47, guilty of culpable homicide under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law of Kano State.

The tragic incident occurred on September 16, 2022, when Quandong fatally stabbed Ummukulsum, 23, at her family residence in Janbulo quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano.

During the court proceedings, Quandong revealed that Ummukulsum’s decision to marry someone else shattered his heart, despite his intentions to marry her. He recounted extensive investments made in their relationship, including preparations for their wedding, which amounted to significant financial contributions.

Quandong detailed substantial expenditures on Ummukulsum, including the purchase of a house, a car, startup capital for her business, and expenses for her new shop. Additionally, he mentioned investments in gold jewelry, university certificate processing fees, and the installation of a solar system in their house, totaling millions of Naira.

He lamented the emotional and financial investments he had made in their relationship, underscoring his commitment to their future together.

The court’s decision marks a significant step in addressing crimes of passion and underscores the importance of justice in cases of violence against women.
