Reacting to the electricity tariff increment, Senator Sani in a post on his X handle said that increasing the electricity tariff by 300 percent will finally electrocute human lives and businesses in the country.

Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has berated President Bola Tinubu’s administration for increasing electricity tariff by 300 percent for Nigerians amid rising inflation and high cost of living in the country.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the Nigerian government had approved N225 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour tariff increment for Band A electricity consumers in the country.

Band A are those who enjoy electricity supply for 20 hours per day.

The Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Musliu Oseni, who made this known at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, said the increase will see the customers paying N225 instead of the current N66 kilowatt per hour.

According to Oseni, customers in Band A represent 15 percent of the 12 million electricity customers in Nigeria.

Oseni further said that the NERC had also downgraded some customers from Band A to Band B due to non-fulfilment of the required hours of electricity provided by the electricity distribution companies.

Reacting to the electricity tariff increment, Senator Sani in a post on his X handle said that increasing the electricity tariff by 300 percent will finally electrocute human lives and businesses in the country.

He said, “Increasing electricity tariffs by 300% will finally electrocute human lives and businesses in the country.”

Also, an X user, Citizen for Ethical Governance @Good_citizins who condemned the increment said that “This government is indeed anti-people. How can you subsidize pilgrimage while electricity, which is the engine of production, is left to hit the roof.”

Another X user, @AGINAS, lamented, “People are already losing jobs due to power outages and they are still talking about increasing electricity tariffs. Ahhh God.

“People will soon leave this country and leave politicians in their country alone.”
