Stranded passengers demand compensation amid worsening flight delays

On April 1, 2024, at exactly 9:20 PM, Mr Odugu Kenneth Kanayo, an X (formerly Twitter) user, through the platform, reached out to a domestic airline in Nigeria appealing for a N110,000 refund.

Based on Kanayo’s post, the N110,000 was the cost of his ticket for an Enugu (ENU) to Abuja (ABV) flight that never happened.

Kanayo stated: “Kindly refund my One hundred & ten thousand Naira (N110,000) only being the cost of my booking for ENU~ABV which was cancelled on 23rd March 2024. Mybooking reference is AFSKFI (QI0596).”

The air passenger’s plea, directed at the airline, came on a day the airline posted its scorecard for March 2024 on X, noting: “Scheduled flights: 745; flights operated: 719; delayed flights: 141; rescheduled flights: 218; cancelled flights: 26; schedule reliability: 67 per cent; on-time performance: 80 per cent.”

Like Anayo’s situation, the trio of delayed flights, rescheduled flights and cancelled flights has become a nightmare to many air travellers across the country.

In fact, the rates of flight delays and cancellations have assumed an alarming dimension, emerging one of the biggest challenges affecting air passengers.
