On Friday, The Patriots, a non-partisan group of distinguished Nigerians led by Emeka Anyaoku, urged President Bola Tinubu to initiate steps towards convening a constituent assembly and holding a referendum. The group made this appeal after a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where they briefed State House journalists.
Anyaoku, who is a former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, proposed that the constituent assembly should consist of three representatives elected from each of Nigeria’s 36 states, with the task of drafting a new Constitution. The group also called on the President to draft a bill for submission to the National Assembly, seeking approval for a nationwide referendum.
Anyaoku emphasized the need for a people’s democratic pluralistic constitution that reflects Nigeria’s diverse nature. He noted that countries like India and Canada, which have successfully managed their diversities, are thriving, while those that failed, such as Yugoslavia, Sudan, and Czechoslovakia, have disintegrated.
