Student loan: No response from S’east institutions yet – NELFUND

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has refuted claims of discrimination in the distribution of student loans to institutions across the country.

According to NELFUND, loans were disbursed only to institutions that met eligibility criteria, following their response to a previously issued verification list.

This statement follows a post by an X user, Santiago Leo, known as #Donaldsplendo, who pointed out that no institutions from the South-East region were among the 19 beneficiaries revealed by NELFUND on Friday.

The government body responsible for managing loan applications, grants, disbursement, and recovery stated that a total of N2,946,927,155 was distributed as student loans to 27,667 students from 19 institutions across the nation.

In his tweet, #Donaldsplendo remarked, “Not surprised to see SE being neglected once again. No funds were allocated to students in UNIZIK, FUTO, MOUAU, and even the University of Nigeria (UNN). I’m sure many students from these schools applied for the loan just like other Nigerian scholars. One Nigeria, indeed.”
