Drunken Osun Amotekun officer allegedly assaults resident over parking dispute in Osogbo

SAHARA REPORTERS

A man identified as Akande Smile Adedayo has accused operatives of the Osun State Amotekun Corps of assaulting him during a dispute over a parking space at Old Garage in Osogbo.

Speaking to SaharaReporters on Tuesday, Akande, a staff member of a mobile gadget company, explained how the confrontation began after a vehicle from his workplace was temporarily parked to deliver goods in the area.

According to Akande, the Amotekun team, led by one Omoyele, arrived and demanded an explanation for the parked vehicle.

Akande, who was standing nearby, said he calmly explained the situation, offering to call the driver who had briefly stepped away.

However, before he could finish, one of the operatives, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, slapped him and dragged him, creating a public spectacle.

He told SaharaReporters that the unprofessional behavior escalated tensions and caused a scene before the intervention of Nigerian police.

Akande said, “I was assaulted by operatives of the Amotekun Corps, a community policing initiative. This unfortunate incident occurred just a little past noon and was a blatant display of unprofessionalism and abuse of power.

“The incident began over a parking dispute. A driver from my workplace had temporarily parked a vehicle to deliver goods in the area. When the Amotekun team, led by one Omoyele, arrived, they demanded to know why the vehicle was parked there.

“As I stood nearby, I calmly explained that the driver had only stepped away briefly and even offered to call him. Before I could finish, a member of the team, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, shockingly slapped me without provocation. This unprofessional behavior escalated tensions and created a public scene.”

Akande told SaharaReporters that despite the aggression, he remained composed and tried to pacify the agitated crowd of onlookers who were appalled by the actions of the Amotekun operatives.

“My intervention helped prevent the situation from spiraling out of control, but this encounter left me shaken and deeply disheartened. It is unacceptable that those entrusted with public safety could resort to such abuse of power.

“However, I must commend the prompt and professional intervention of members of the Nigeria Police Force stationed in the area (Dugbe). Their timely arrival and impartial response de-escalated the situation and ensured my safety,” he said.

He said they exemplified professionalism and commitment to duty, qualities that should define a security agency, and for this, he was deeply grateful.

Akande expressed that security operatives must be held to the highest standards of professionalism, respect for human dignity, and accountability.

He called on the Osun State Government and all relevant authorities to conduct an independent investigation.

He said, “Those found guilty of assault or misconduct should face the full weight of the law to serve as a deterrent.

“They should reform the Amotekun Corps. Comprehensive training and oversight mechanisms must be implemented to prevent future occurrences of abuse.

“They should issue a public apology. The leadership of Amotekun must formally apologize for the physical and emotional harm caused to me.

“The abuse of power by any security agency is a threat to our collective rights as Nigerians.”

“I urge human rights organizations, civil society groups, and the general public to stand with me in demanding justice. This is not just about my personal experience—it is about fostering a society where no individual has to endure such abuse at the hands of those meant to protect us,” Akande added.

When SaharaReporters contacted the Osun State Amotekun Commander, CSP Adekunle Omoyele, he said he was not aware of the matter.

“I’m not aware of the matter. Had the person reported it, I would have known about it,” he said.
