Upset over the death of his parents in a road accident back home, a 37-year-old Nigerian national allegedly tried to kill himself by jumping from the second floor of a residential building in Outer Delhi’s Nihal Vihar. Police said the man, Ndinojuo Bede, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment.
Police also said after he fell on the road, Ndinojuo grabbed a man for help but a few locals thought he was attacking the man and allegedly beat him with sticks. Purported videos of the incident surfaced online in which he was seen being hit by some people.
Police said they received a PCR about the incident on March 18. DCP (Outer) Harendra K Singh said: said, “An investigating officer went to the spot and found the Nigerian national in an injured condition. He was asking locals and passersby for help. During enquiry, it was revealed that the man had jumped from the second floor of his apartment building. He was taken to SGM Hospital.”
“In his statement, he told us that earlier that morning, he got a call from his friends in Nigeria about his parents’ death and was upset. He then jumped from the balcony. His neighbours corroborated his statement, no foul play was found,” added the DCP.
In one of the videos shared online, Ndinojuo is seen hanging from his balcony and shouting at everyone. He then jumps and is seen writhing in pain on the road. In another video, he is seen grappling with a man as locals beat him up.
A senior police officer said, “Ndinojuo fell on the road… he was devastated. He held onto a man as nobody was able to understand him. There was a misunderstanding among the locals as they thought he was attacking the man, but he was only asking for help…”
The men were taken to the hospital and later discharged. Ndinojuo said, “After I heard the news about my parents’ death, I was depressed. I live alone. I didn’t know what I was doing and made a stupid decision by jumping…
