An elderly man who collapsed during a hike in Death Valley and later died ignored severe heat warnings and went for the walk as temperatures flirted with breaking records.
A record high of 56.67C was measured in 1913 at Death Valley in eastern California and it is once again threatening to get that hot again, as tourists and hikers flock to feel it.
The US National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning, urging people to take “extreme levels of precautions” if venturing outside.
But that hasn’t stopped some hardy hikers going into the valley. The unidentified 71-year-old was said to have collapsed outside a restroom at Golden Canyon as temperatures reach 49.4C in the area.DAILY
