Scientists have outlined the possible destruction the world’s scariest supervolcano could cause if it erupted, launching a city-sized piece of land into the air.
The Yellowstone supervolcano, found in the national park of the same name in Wyoming, US, is one of 20 supervolcanoes on Earth, and a recent discovery makes its eruption an even more terrifying thought.
Scientists have learned that the magma found underneath the supervolcano’s caldera (similar to a crater and created as part of a volcanic eruption) has the consistency of mush, meaning the quantity of molten rock beneath Yellowstone is far higher than previously thought.
Yellowstone last erupted more than 70,000 years ago, and to be clear, there is no indication that it might blow again anytime soon.
