Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed the relevant authorities in his country to immediately deport 44 Nigerians held at the Mirihana Detention Centre on charges of online scams, the Daily Mirror has said.

Accordingly, the President directed the Controller-General of Immigration and Emigration to utilize state funds to deport the Nigerians arrested not long ago in Sri Lanka for alleged online scam.

Citing investigations, the Sri Lankan outlet said the arrested Nigerians “recommenced their criminal activities once again while being at the detention centre.”

The Controller-General of Immigration and Emigration had reportedly informed the President that some 41 million rupees would be spent on the deportation and that the country’s Police Department had agreed to pay 80% of the total amount.

Since several international airlines had refused to take the Nigerians, steps would be taken to use Sri Lankan Airlines to transport them back to Nigeria, the news outlet said.

It also reported that The Air Force Commander had agreed to provide an Air Force plane for the purpose.

Earlier, Sri Lankan police requested the public not to get trapped in these online scams as there was an increase of complaints about such activities in the recent past.

The police accused the Nigerians of sending scam messages to the public via electronic mail, WhatsApp, or SMS.

“Several prominent professionals including doctors and lawyers had paid millions of rupees to the scammers,” an official said.
