162 stranded Nigerians, mostly females and children, return from Libya

A total of 162 stranded Nigerians in Libya arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos in the early hours of Tuesday.

They were received by officials of the federal government led by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The Afriqiyah flight, which conveyed the returnees, arrived at the airport at 2:10 a.m.

The returnees were brought back to the country by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) through the Voluntary Repatriation Programme for the distressed who had left the country to seek greener pasture in various European countries.

Daily Trust reports that IOM, in its 20 years of operation in Nigeria, had facilitated the return of over 22,000 stranded Nigerians in several countries.

The breakdown of the latest returnees showed that 98 female adults, 28 male adults, 19 female children, five male children, nine female infants and three male infants made up the total figure of 162.

Among the returnees were five with various degrees of health-related issues, said the NEMA coordinator in the state, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye.
