Protest against economic hardship erupts in Abuja

TRIBUNE

A group supportive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu organized a protest in Abuja ahead of the planned strike by the labour movement next week. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) had issued a strike notice over the government’s failure to implement agreements reached in October 2023, particularly regarding petrol subsidy removal.

The pro-Tinubu group, operating under the Nigeria Civil Society Forum (NCSF), criticized the strike as unnecessary and urged NLC to reconsider, claiming it could plunge Nigeria into anarchy. They advocated for patience with the government, stating that policies take time to yield results, and urged NLC to return to negotiation rather than resorting to strike action.

The convener of the CSO forum advised NLC to focus on negotiating with the government to find solutions to issues rather than resorting to sabotage or antagonism.
