Oyo State implements ban on styrofoam for food packaging

At the recent Food Safety Stakeholders Forum held in Ibadan, the Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, announced the prohibition of Styrofoam for food packaging in the state. Addressing concerns about food poisoning and improper food handling practices by food business operators, Ajetunmobi emphasized the need for stricter regulation.

“The Directorate of Food, Water, and Laboratory Services will intensify efforts to monitor and inspect food business premises to ensure the provision of safe edibles for public consumption,” stated the commissioner.

Additionally, the Oyo State Government has established a task force on food safety, comprising members from various relevant sectors. The task force aims to enforce food safety standards and combat unwholesome practices in food production and distribution.

Afusat Akande, the Director of Food, Water, and Laboratory Services at the State Ministry of Health, outlined the necessary requirements for certification along the food chain. These include obtaining routine medical fitness certificates from designated state hospitals, evidence of regular fumigation of production premises, and water quality analysis, among other criteria.

The initiatives reflect the state government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of food products available to the public.
