Nigerian Police arrest online influencer #SirJarus in Lagos for domestic violence

The Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has confirmed that an online influencer, Suraj Oyewale, widely recognised as #SirJarus, has been arrested and is currently in police custody.

The agency on June 28, reported that an allegation of abuse involving #SirJarus, was referred to the police for investigation.

The DSVA noted that #SirJarus addressed the issue through a series of tweets, providing clarification on the incident involving him and his wife, Mrs Oyewale Ayoola.

In the now-deleted tweets, Oyewale alleged that his wife engaged in fetish practices and provocative behaviour, which he claimed led to a physical altercation.

DSVA in statement by Head Public Affairs Unit, Adejoke Ladenegan-Oginni, stated that as the Statutory Agency in Lagos State dedicated to preventing and responding to domestic and sexual violence, “we take this very seriously”.

The agency maintained that domestic violence in any form was unacceptable, and the Lagos State Government maintained a zero-tolerance stance against it.

“We have, as an Agency referred this to the Commissioner of Police (Gender Desk Department) to ensure that investigation commences.”

These statements have ignited outrage on social media, particularly on X.com, where users have expressed a wide range of opinions on the matter.

However, in an updated shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, on Wednesday, the agency stated “@SirJarus is currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing.

“We commend the @LagosPoliceNG for their swift and diligent response in handling this matter.”
