Nigeria’s Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Joseph Utsev, has warned of potential river flooding on the Niger and Benue rivers, citing a large volume of water flowing towards the Niger Delta region.
The recent flood disaster in Maiduguri, Borno State, was largely due to an overflow from the Alau Dam, resulting from a massive inflow from the Ngadda River. Utsev emphasized the need for vigilance and proactive measures to address future flooding events in the southern part of the country.
He also referred to the 2024 Annual Flood Outlook publication, which listed 31 states as high flood risk areas.
