Nigeria’s social media unregulated, Islamic group laments

The leadership of a religious group, the Academy of Islamic Propagation, on Wednesday, lamented improper usage of social media tools in the country, saying many users often run foul of the law with the contents they share.

This was disclosed in Osogbo on Wednesday by the Vice President of the Academy, Mr. U.S Imam while briefing journalists on the activities planned to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the group.

Imam, a lawyer, who said the leader of the Academy, Mallam Yusuf Adepoju, and his followers often come under attacks by social media users, noted that legal provisions have been largely relied on to protect the group and its members from cyber bullies.

He said, “In Nigeria, we are using social media unrestrictedly. Social media has no regulation, which is why it is being abused.

“We see people, and by the time we listen and watch their contents, we realize they have crossed the line; they would have fallen into the pit of defamation.
