SAHARA REPORTERS
A 36-year-old man, Oluwasegun Oluwarotimi, has been left to beg on the streets after being shot by an operative of Ondo State Security Network Agency, code-named Amotekun in August 2021.
Although Oluwarotimi won a court case against the Ondo State Government, he has yet to receive the N30 million compensation awarded by the High Court and upheld by the Court of Appeal.
In November 2024, SaharaReporters reported that the Court of Appeal sitting in Akure had struck out the appeal filed by the Ondo State Government against the judgment of the State High Court awarding N30 million against the state government in favour of Mr Oluwasegun.
Oluwarotimi was shot in the leg by an operative of the security outfit in Akure in August 2021 and subsequently abandoned.
The affected leg was later amputated.
On March 29, 2023, an Ondo State High Court ordered the state government to pay the sum of N30 million as compensation to Oluwarotimi, after the commercial motorcyclist lost his leg to a gunshot injury.
Appearing in a recent video obtained by SaharaReporters, Oluwasegun is seen begging at a popular market in Ondo State.
He said he resorted to begging because he has been abandoned by the state government since the shooting incident three years ago.
He said: “They have turned me into a beggar since 2021 and we are now in 2025, I can work now, and my legs are healed. I can ride a tricycle (Keke Maruwa). I drove Keke for three days, and the little money I made is what I managed last night.
“And now, there is no Keke again to work. This is why I decided to come to the market to beg so that my child and I could eat. Ondo State Government was asked to pay me money (compensation), but they did not give me anything.
“They dragged me to the Court of Appeal, and the court rejected their appeal and ordered them to pay me but still they did not give me the money. The Court of Appeal asked them to pay me N30 million.
“The court also compelled them to add N250,000 to the money because of late payment, but they paid nothing. See me now, I have been handicapped by my condition. Please, help me, Ondo State Government.
“Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, please, help me. I am Oluwasegun Oluwarotimi. I was shot at Araromi Junction by Amotekun in August 2021. They aimed the gun at my leg. They took me to Federal Medical Centre in Owo and abandoned me there. But I won the case at the High Court, I also won at the Appeal Court.”
