Lucy Letby was 'trying to kill baby girl when paediatric consultant walked in on her'

A doctor walked in on Lucy Letby as she was trying to kill a baby girl, it was claimed today – with jurors hearing how he found the newborn’s breathing tube had been dislodged and ‘realised the coincidence between the unexplained deaths’ and her presence.  

Dr Ravi Jayaram, a paediatric consultant, had helped deliver Child K, who was born at 25 weeks on February 17, 2016 at the Countess of Chester Hospital and weighed just 692g. She was considered in as good a condition as possible for a baby born that early and was booked into Letby’s neo-natal unit.

Around 90 minutes later, as arrangements were being made for the baby’s transfer to a more specialist hospital on Merseyside, Dr Jayaram was at the nurses’ station writing up his notes about the birth. He could not see into room one, where Child K was, but was aware Letby was alone with the baby, the jury heard.
