Just Stop Oil activists have climbed the Dartford Bridge, causing police to close the Thames crossing at the height of rush-hour.
Furious drivers say the M25 has become a ‘car park’ as they are stuck in traffic while officers try to coax down a pair of eco-protesters who scaled the girders this morning.
Essex Police says it closed the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, which links the M25 over the River Thames between Essex and Kent, to all traffic after the eco-zealots were spotted climbing shortly before 3.50am.
There are reports of more than seven miles of congestion on the M25 and A282 in Kent running up to the crossing, while there are queues of more than five miles in Essex, with police having to divert traffic through one of the Dartford Tunnels to prevent complete gridlock.
In an ominous warning, the Just Stop Oil said this morning that it expects the bridge to remain closed for ‘at least 24 hours’ while the demonstrators remain in the air.
