Liz Truss's final moments in power: Smiling outgoing PM is joined by husband and daughters

Liz Truss was clapped out of No10 by staff today as she quit Downing Street – and frontline politics – and entered the history books as the shortest-serving UK prime minister ever.

In images shared by No10 she was seen smiling as she waited with husband Hugh O’Leary and their daughters Frances, 16, and Liberty, 13 behind the famous black door before facing the cameras.

Once outside she hailed her ‘significant achievements’ in a defiant valedictory address with little hint of emotion and no apology as she drew a line under a disastrous 49 days at the helm of the country.

Watched by her family and No10 staff and aides, she said it had been a ‘huge honour to lead the country’. ‘In just a short period this government has acted urgently and decisively… we helped millions of households with their energy bills,’ she said.  

Earlier, she gathered her Cabinet one last time, telling them they had been in charge at a ‘vital moment in the history of our country’.
