SNP meltdown as Mhairi Black 28 becomes the latest MP to quit Westminster

A senior SNP MP has become the latest to announced they are quitting Westminster at the next election amid turmoil in the party.

Mhairi Black, who was the youngest MP in the Commons for 350 years when she was first elected in 2015 at the age of 20, confirmed she will step down in a vote held before she turns 30. 

The SNP deputy leader at Westminster said she was ‘tired’ after spending almost a third of her life so far in politics, and lashed out at the ‘toxic’ work environment in Westminster. 

The former Westminster leader, Ian Blackford, is also standing down, as are former treasurer Douglas Chapman and MPs Peter Grant and Angela Crawley.

It comes during a troubled period for the party, which is being investigated by Police Scotland over the whereabout of more than £600,000 in donations. It has seen former first minister Nicola Sturgeon and others arrested.
