Heatwave Charon is expected to break the record 48.8C temperature as it hits Europe

A new fierce heatwave is expected to unleash record-breaking 49C temperatures in Europe this week as British tourists across the Mediterranean brace themselves for more unrelenting heat.

Tourists have collapsed and fainted in Italy and Greece and wildfires have ripped through homes in La Palma and Turkey in the past week after temperatures across southern Europe hit 43C.

But the sweltering temperatures are set to soar even higher in the coming days as a new anticyclone called Charon, who in Greek mythology was the ferryman of the dead, reached Europe from North Africa on Sunday night.

The Italian island of Sardinia is set to bear the brunt of the unforgiving heat, with forecasters predicting that temperatures there could reach a record-breaking 49C. The previous record high of 48.8C was registered in the Sicilian town of Floridia on August 11, 2021.
