JUST IN: Nigeria’s health security rises by 15% in five years

A joint team of experts on Friday said Nigeria’s readiness to prevent, detect and respond to public health threats has increased to 54 per cent.

The experts said the score increased from 39 per cent in 2017 to 54 per cent in 2023. They noted that this means that Nigeria has 54 per cent capacity in public health security.

The experts said this at the end of the five-day second JEE for International Health Regulations Core Capacities in Abuja.

A Joint External Evaluation (JEE), according to the WHO, is a voluntary, collaborative, multisectoral process to assess a country’s capacities to prevent, detect and rapidly respond to public health risks whether occurring naturally or due to deliberate or accidental events.

The JEE team noted that in 2023, Nigeria did not score below 50 per cent in any thematic area – prevention, detection, response, and International Health Regulations related to hazards and Point of Entry and border health.
