Reason for widespread power outage in Northern Nigeria uncertain — TCN

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a significant power outage affecting the North-East, North-West, and parts of North-Central regions due to a fault in its 330kV Ugwaji-Apir transmission lines.

The incident occurred at 4:53 am on Monday when the Ugwuaji-Makurdi Line 2 tripped due to a fault, resulting in a total loss of 468 MW by 4:58 am. Despite efforts by two teams dispatched for fault tracing, navigating challenging terrains, the cause remains undetermined.

TCN has restored supply to the 132kV line but the 330kV lines remain down, impacting power distribution. Additionally, the TCN Shiroro-Mando transmission line is also down due to security reasons, causing another power outage in the North.

This latest development follows multiple collapses of the National grid, with at least eight cases recorded in 2024 alone. TCN apologises for the inconvenience and assures that work is ongoing to resolve the issue.
