Military recovers 1.2 million-barrel crude, destroys 56 illegal refineries

The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army has ramped up its campaign against illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta, dismantling 56 illegal refineries, recovering over 1.2 million liters of stolen crude, and arresting 17 suspects.

The operations, conducted between November 25 and December 1, 2024, spanned Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, and Akwa Ibom states, according to the acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Jonah Danjuma.

Danjuma explained that the division’s operatives, working in conjunction with other security agencies, executed a series of raids across several bunkering sites.

“In Bayelsa State, at an abandoned Oando wellhead in Okordia Forest, Yenagoa LGA, 15 illegal refining sites were dismantled. Troops recovered over 755,000 liters of stolen crude and 53,000 liters of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO),” he said.
