Former Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, has tragically died following a confrontation with police officers at a roadblock in the Upper Sokponba area of Benin City.
Civil society organizations have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the police to identify and hold accountable the officers involved in the incident, which has sparked widespread outrage.
According to Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Eboigbodin was stopped on Monday while driving with his wife.
The police reportedly demanded his vehicle documents, which were up to date, but raised concerns over a perceived discrepancy between the car’s glass engraving and its plate number.
Despite his explanations, the officers allegedly seized Eboigbodin’s documents and called for a tow truck to impound his car. Tensions at the scene escalated, and the former labour leader reportedly slumped.
