Premier League releases statement on why Havertz’s goal against Villa was cancelled

The Premier League on Saturday night issued a statement explaining why Kai Havertz’s late goal for Arsenal against Aston Villa was chalked off.

Havertz thought that he’ had scored a potential winner to make it 3-2 in the 87th minute.

Mikel Merino’s shot had deflected off the German into the net.

But following a VAR check, the goal was ruled out, with the ball adjudged to have come off Havertz’s arm.

Boos rang around the Emirates Stadium, after referee Chris Kavanagh confirmed VAR’s decision

“The Arsenal goal was awarded on-field,” the Premier League’s Match Centre account on X wrote.

“The VAR established that the ball hit Havertz’s arm immediately before entering the goal and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”

Havertz had scored to double Arsenal’s advantage after Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring.

But Villa equalized, thanks to goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins.
