Michael van Gerwen might be a three-time world champion, but the Dutchman has admitted he finds watching darts 'boring'.

The 34-year-old had been the favourite to lift the Sid Waddell Trophy at Alexandra Palace.

But he made an unexpected early exit from the tournament after losing to Scott Williams in the quarter-finals.

And while a record-breaking crowd for a non-football event tuned in to watch Luke Humphries beat teenage prodigy Luke Littler, MVG had decided even before the final began that he would not be watching.

Asked on JaackMaate's Happy Hour podcast if it was because it would be too difficult to watch someone else play in a final he had failed to reach, Van Gerwen instead said that it was simply because he 'never' watches darts.

He said: "If someone else from Holland would be in it I probably can watch a bit, not all the game, I watch some.

"I'm not going to sit in front of the telly and watch - no chance.

"It's boring. In the meantime, I can practice myself and try to get better. Next year, there is another final."

After Littler's loss, Gerwen remains the youngest ever player to win the PDC World Championship after he won the 2014 edition at the age of just 24.

The world number two will no doubt return next year in search of a fourth PDC World Championship.

But for now, the father-of-two remained full of ideas of what he might do instead of watching darts.

He remarked: "I don't really like watching it, it's not that I can't watch, it's I rather not.
