In response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a 20% tariff on European Union imports, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for European companies to suspend planned investments in the United States. Speaking ahead of a meeting with industry representatives affected by the tariffs, Macron stated, “What would the message be of having big European players that invest billions in the American economy at the same time they are hitting us,” emphasizing the need for collective solidarity among European nations.

Macron also criticized the U.S. tariffs as “brutal and unfounded,” suggesting that Europe consider retaliatory measures, including targeting U.S. digital services and reassessing financial ties with the U.S. economy. He warned that Europe’s response would be more substantial than previous retaliations to U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs, signaling a significant escalation in transatlantic trade tensions.
