Saturday Punch reports that Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have rejected the judgement of the tribunal overturning his victory in the governorship election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it doesn’t have the power to compel universities to declare holidays to enable students to vote during the forthcoming elections, the newspaper says.

The Nation says anger and frustration have trailed the scarcity of new naira notes ahead of the January 31 deadline. The newspaper reports that INEC is set to conduct mock accreditation of voters nationwide.

Daily Trust reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is under pressure to extend the January 31 deadline for old naira notes. The newspaper says passengers were stranded on Friday after a Kaduna-Abuja train derailed at Kubwa in Abuja.

The Guardian says traders and point of sales (POS) operators have started to reject the old naira notes ahead of the January 31 deadline. The newspaper reports that the Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) seized hard drugs, machetes, arms and ammunition and 38 other contrabands worth N1.8 billion in 2022.

THISDAY reports that President Muhammadu Buhari said he escaped from his home in Daura shortly after secondary education to join the Nigerian army due to family pressure on him to get married then. The newspaper says the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has said there was no basis for the lingering scarcity of petrol as there are over 1.6 billion litres of the product in the country.
