Newspaper Headlines: Jet fuel, cooking gas prices fall amid petrol subsidy removal

The suspension of the nationwide strike by organised labour, after a meeting with federal government representatives on Monday, dominates the cover pages of Nigerian dailies today.

Daily Trust reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said it has suspended its nationwide strike planned for Wednesday. Since the removal of subsidy on petrol, the price of cooking gas and jet fuel has been falling, the newspaper says.

The Nation says health workers, under the aegis of the Joint Health Workers’ Union (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professionals (AHPA), have suspended their indefinite strike. The newspaper reports that Hope Uzodinma, governor of Imo, said governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are supporting Tajudeen Abbas and Benjamin Kalu as their preferred candidates for speaker and deputy speaker respectively.

THISDAY reports that NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have reached a tentative agreement with the federal government over the removal of petrol subsidy. The newspaper says President Bola Tinubu has ordered security agencies to share information and intelligence on counterterrorism among

themselves.

The Punch says the Nigeria Customs Service says it intercepted 30,900 litres of petrol and 6,861 bags of foreign parboiled rice equivalent to a duty paid value of N1bn in May 2023. The newspaper reports that the house of representatives committee on Aviation has rescheduled its investigative hearing on the controversial launch of Air Nigeria, Nigeria’s national carrier, by the last administration of Muhammadu Buhari.

Nigerian Tribune says the federal high court in Abuja has restrained the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from detaining Abdulaziz Yari, former governor of Zamfara. The newspaper reports that the Kwara government has reduced the work days of civil servants in the state from five to three days per week.
