Wednesday’s UK newspaper front pages: 16 August 2023

The Guardian

The Guardian leads on the news that three Bulgarian nationals have been accused of spying in Britain on behalf of the Russian security services. The trio are among a total of five arrested, but the two others have not yet been named.

The Daily Telegraph

The three people accused of spying for the Kremlin makes the splash in the Daily Telegraph with the paper branding the group “Russia’s Northolt spy ring”. The trio are believed to have been in the UK for about a decade.

The Times

The Times leads on the news that three Bulgarians accused of spying for the Russians allegedly posed as journalists in order to carry out surveillance.

Daily Star

The news that the long lost graves of members of the Knights Templar have been found in a church in a Staffordshire village after 800 years is the lead story in the Daily Star.

Daily Express

The Daily Express leads on the news that the state pension is set to rise by 8.2% to £11,469 a year after salaries spiked at record rates in the month to June.

Daily Mirror

The Bulgarian nationals arrested in Britain on suspicion of spying for Russia are the splash in the Daily Mirror. The paper leads with an image of the unassuming north London bungalow two of the alleged Kremlin agents lived in.

The Sun

The Sun leads on England’s upcoming clash with Australia in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. The Lionesses will come up against the Matildas at 11am on Wednesday when they will hope to book a place in the final. 

Daily Mail

Three Bulgarians arrested in London and Norfolk for allegedly spying for Russia are the lead in the Daily Mail.  The paper reports they allegedly had forged passports and ID cards for the UK, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, France, Croatia, Slovenia, Greece and the Czech Republic.

The alleged spies for Russia who were arrested in suburban Britain make the front page of the i. The paper says three Bulgarian nationals were detained, including two in Harrow and one in Great Yarmouth. The trio are accused of possessing forged documents including press cards and passports.

Financial Times

The Financial Times leads on the news that the private equity firm TPG Capital has approached EY about buying a stake in its consulting arm and separating it from EY’s audit business.

Metro

The news that alleged spies for Russia have been arrested in the UK and charged by police is the lead in the Metro. The paper names three of the accused as Bizer Dzhambazov, Katrin Ivanova and Orlin Roussev.
