Nigerian Newspapers Front Pages: 19 December 2024

The stampede that occurred during a children funfair in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, permeates the frontpages. 

The Punch reports that the police command in Oyo said it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the reported death of 32 children during a stampede at a funfair in Ibadan, with Naomi Silekunola, ex-wife of Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, named as one of the organisers. The newspaper says 18 local government chairmen in Edo state have rejected their suspension by the state house of assembly.
THISDAY reports that President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday presented a N49.7 trillion budget proposal to the national assembly. The newspaper says many indigenous oil and gas companies have emerged winners of onshore and deep offshore oil blocks, otherwise known as petroleum prospecting licences, to begin exploration, development and production activities on the assets.
Daily Trust reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has set a daily transaction limit of N1.2 million for point-of-sale (PoS) agents. The newspaper says victims of property demolition in Abuja are lamenting over the exercise, saying it is compounding their hardship.
Nigerian Tribune reports Tinubu as saying that the country’s inflation rate, which stands at 33.8 percent, will slide to 15 percent in 2025. Olayemi Cardoso, CBN governor, said the apex bank will not spare commercial banks colluding with hawkers of naira notes.
