Millions at risk as Microsoft to end support for Windows 10 in October

Microsoft will stop issuing security updates for Windows 10 on October 14, a move critics say could expose hundreds of millions of users to cyber threats while forcing costly upgrades and fueling e-waste.

Microsoft’s decision to end support for Windows 10 on October 14 has triggered global concern among consumer groups and users, many of whom face costly upgrades to avoid cybersecurity risks.

After the deadline, computers running the 2015 operating system will no longer receive security patches. “By receiving no updates, you’re no longer protecting yourself against the most recent cybersecurity risks,” warned Martin Kraemer, a security expert at KnowBe4.

Microsoft has urged customers to switch to Windows 11, but many older devices are incompatible. The company is offering a one-year security extension for $30, though critics argue this unfairly burdens consumers.

US watchdog Consumer Reports said, “The lack of backwards compatibility for certain Windows 10 machines sold only a couple of years ago is a blow to consumers’ pocketbooks.”

European groups have also pushed back, citing e-waste concerns. Estimates suggest up to 400 million devices may not upgrade, leaving users vulnerable unless they adopt alternatives such as Linux.
