It is now 116 days since men of the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN), popularly known as Amotekun, arrested Olayinka Aguda, a student at Polytechnic Ibadan, Oyo State.
Presently, Aguda’s relatives do not know whether their son is still alive or has since died.
Lukman Olorunshola, Aguda’s cousin, told FIJ the family had done all they could to secure the student’s release but without success.
Olorunshola further said the entire extended family were gradually giving up on the hope of ever seeing their son again because they could no longer tell whether he was still alive or dead.
“The father and mother are so confused that they do not know what to do anymore. They are tired, but his mother is hopeful he would return,” Olorunshola told FIJ.
“And as for me, I think the boy is dead. He’s been in Amotekun’s custody since December 30.”
WHAT HAPPENED TO OLAYINKA AGUDA?
Olorunshola stated that it all started on December 30, 2022, when the Apata neighbourhood in Ibadan summoned the Amotekun to ward off armed robbers in the area.
Rather than ensure the security of lives and property in the area, the officers indiscriminately harassed people in the neighbourhood regularly.
On the night of the incident, Aguda had woken up to the ear-splitting sounds of sporadic gun shots. Thinking his neighbourhood had been invaded by armed robbers, the student was said to have run out of the house to seek shelter somewhere else.
