The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has urged President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), citing the necessity for the South-East region’s well-being.
This plea follows the recent denial of Kanu’s bail request by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
Most Reverend Lucius Ugorji, President of the CBCN, conveyed this appeal during the episcopal ordination of the Auxiliary Bishop of Orlu Diocese in Imo State.
Ugorji emphasized that Kanu’s release would facilitate economic growth and enhance security in the South East, asserting that his prolonged detention has been a significant factor contributing to insecurity in the region. He highlighted the adverse economic impact of the weekly Monday sit-at-home protests, which have led to substantial financial losses for businesses in the zone.
Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja had rejected Kanu’s bail plea on Tuesday but ordered an expedited hearing of the case.
Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest in June 2021.
