UK issues travel warning to citizens over potential nationwide protests in Nigeria

The United Kingdom has issued a warning to its citizens against traveling to several regions in Nigeria, cautioning that a new wave of nationwide protests could erupt at any moment with little warning.

“Political rallies, protests, and violent demonstrations can occur with little notice. Seek advice on areas to avoid,” stated the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) in a travel advisory released on Tuesday.

The FCDO advised UK citizens to avoid all but essential travel to cities like Abuja, Lagos, Borno, Kano, and Imo, among others, due to the possibility of renewed nationwide protests following the conclusion of recent days-long demonstrations.

The advisory noted, “Widespread public demonstrations took place across Nigeria from August 1 to 7, including in major cities like Abuja and Lagos. These events led to disruptions, reports of violence, and the use of tear gas by security forces in various locations.”

While the FCDO acknowledged that protests have largely subsided, it warned that they could resume with little notice. The office recommended exercising caution when traveling, avoiding travel after dark, steering clear of large crowds and gatherings, and staying informed through local media and UK Travel Advice.

In previous advisories, the FCDO advised against travel to many northern states, including Borno, Katsina, Kano, and Kebbi, due to terrorism concerns. It also warned against travel to Abia State, non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, and Imo states due to security risks.

UK citizens were further urged to be cautious when traveling to various other regions in Nigeria due to instability.

  1. “Incidents of inter-communal violence occur frequently and often without warning throughout Nigeria. Although foreign nationals are not usually targeted, there is a risk of being caught in an attack. Monitor local government announcements and media reports,” the advisory added.
