FG declines responsibility for delays in new minimum wage implementation

The Nigerian Federal Government has denied responsibility for the delayed implementation of the N70,000 national minimum wage. Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, blamed the delay on the committee’s failure to finalize figures for consequential adjustment.

However, she stated that separate meetings were ongoing between the government and the tripartite committee. Onyejeocha spoke at a Town Hall engagement with organised labour and employers on the Eight Point Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration in Abuja.

She urged everyone to show more understanding and work together to find a way forward that will bring meaningful results to the nation. The Ministry is responsible for ensuring decent work in all sectors of the economy and maintaining industrial peace and harmony in workplaces, which is crucial for national growth and development.

The government is committed to tackling socio-economic ills and collaborating with policymakers, including employers and workers representatives, to achieve progress.
