Man falls to his death after climbing out of window to escape fire on top floor of Bristol tower

A man has died and eight people have been taken to hospital after a fire ripped through the top floor of a Bristol tower block.

Emergency services were called to Twinnell House, in Easton, in the early hours of this morning after reports a blaze had broken out on the 16th floor of the residential building.

A total of 11 fire engines rushed to the scene shortly after 2.15am, and although the fire was ‘quickly extinguished’, a man was confirmed to have died.

Police say 11 other people were hurt in the incident, with eight of those taken to hospital – seven for treatment for smoke inhalation, and one for minor burns.

The other three people were treated by paramedics at the scene, while around 90 residents have been evacuated from the building.

Bristol City Council says it is providing welfare support to around 40 people at a rest centre at St Nicholas Of Tolentino RC Church in nearby Lawfords Gate.
